Lavender is a nervous system regulator and has a soft, pleasing scent that blends well with most essential oils.  As I can attest, it's wonderful for minor cuts and burns. It has no known contraindications and I use it extensively in hospice - in nebulizers placed in patient rooms prior to arrival, in the bed bath water to further calm and soothe and in the majority of my blends for cremes and lotions.
Citrusy, sweet and fresh, Lemon is antiviral and antibacterial. It can be used as a diuretic and it helps with depressions. It's good for disinfecting a room. Caution: Photosensitizing.
Lemongrass is widely used in commercial products like soaps and laundry products. It's a good room freshener. It has strong antiseptic and antibacterial effects and is anti-inflammatory and sedative in low concentrations. However, it can be an irritatnt in high concentrations.
Can be used much the same as Lemon. It's a good antiseptic, antiviral and febrifuge. Caution: Phototoxic.
An exotic, floral essential oil, Lotus is traditionally used for ethereal, spirit or chakra work and is called a spiritual oil. It brings heightened awareness and a sense of serenity. Do not use if pregnant.
Mandarin has a similar orangey scent to Tangerine but it contains an anthranilic acid ester that gives it sedative effects. A great oil for stressed or nervous children, it calms the central nervous system. Caution: Phototoxic.
Analgesic, antibacterial, antifungal and antimicrobial. It's been shown to be about 20 times stronger than Tea Tree against gram-positive organisms (Cooke & Cooke 1994). Although I used Tea Tree effectively against the ringworm that my shelter-rescued kitties gave me some years back, I'd probably have gotten quicker results with Manuka.
Marjoram has a sedative effect on the parasympathetic nervous system. It has antiviral activities against Herpes simplex. It contains the constituent terpinen-4-ol, which makes it a great respiratory oil.
Although May Chang has an overpowering aroma on its own, it's fabulous when blended. It's good for
anxiety and insomnia, and since it's anti-inflammatory, back pain. If you need something for anxiety
and you can't afford Melissa, try using May Chang.
